Obituary for William Richard "Bill" WETTLAUFER

WETTLAUFER: William “Bill” Richard, 79 of Tavistock, passed away on Tuesday December 20, 2022 at London University Hospital. He was born March 25, 1943 at Stratford, a son of the late Percy John Wettlaufer (1979) and the former Ruth Marie Hinz (2021)

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years the former Gloria Marie Leis – whom he married September 21, 1968 at Tavistock Mennonite Church; Son Scott and his wife Erika of Cambridge and Daughter Angela of St. Marys; two Grandchildren Emily and Joshua of Cambridge; his sister Lynda Lou Wettlaufer of St. Marys, sister-in-law Claudette Wettlaufer and sister-in-law Elaine Weicker of Tavistock; and by his Wettlaufer and Weicker Nieces and Nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Bob Wettlaufer (2017) Jack Wettlaufer (2022) his Father and Mother – in- law Mahlon & Marie (Zehr) Leis (2013), his brothers-in-law Jerry Leis (1990) Bob Leis (1997), Jim Weicker (2020).

Along with his father Percy and brother Jack, they farmed together in the partnership of PERRU FARMS. He was a former member of the Oxford County Junior Farmers, Oxford County Junior Farmers Tug of War team and 4H calf club. Bill lived in Tavistock all his life and was always a strong supporter of his community.

Bill was an active member of Tavistock Mennonite Church where he served on many committees, including The Care Team – Jr. Sunday School Teacher – along with Gloria they were MYF sponsors for 8 years.

He was an active member and Past President of The Tavistock Agricultural Society since a teenager – and was Head of the “North Gate” - but a few years ago became the “Assistant” Head to his nephew Charlie. He loved to be at the gate each year greeting the many fair goers. Along with Gloria they received the Agricultural Service Diploma in 1991.

Bill was the recipient of an award from the Ontario Municipal Recreation Association in 1995 for
his contribution to recreation. In 2014 Bill was one of the recipients of The Senior of the Year Award from East Zorra-Tavistock.

He was an active member and Past President of The Tavistock Men’s Club and served as Chair and Co-Chairperson of The Club’s Annual Sauerkraut Supper.

For 23 years Bill was a member of The Tavistock Volunteer Fire Department where he retired at the rank of Captain. He was honoured by The Tavistock Department when they nominated him to carry the Relay Torch for the 2010 Winter Olympics when the relay passed through Tavistock riding on the Antique Fire Truck.

Bill was also an honourary member of the “Stonepickers”.

Relatives and friends will be received at The Francis Funeral Home, 77 Woodstock St. N Tavistock on Wednesday December 28Th 2022, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at Tavistock Mennonite Church, 131 Wettlaufer St. Tavistock on Thursday, December 29Th 2022 at 11:00 am. Pastor Jim Brown will officiate. Interment in East Zorra Mennonite Church Cemetery. Reception to follow.

The Service will be live streamed from Tavistock Mennonite Church.
