Obituary for Dorothy Irene KENNEDY

Dorothy Irene Kennedy, 95, of Tavistock and formerly of Toronto and Kingston passed away peacefully at peopleCare Tavistock on Monday, November 13, 2023.

Dorothy was born in Toronto on July 17, 1928, the youngest child of Albert and Amy (Spankie) Kennedy and was predeceased by her siblings, Aileen, Albert (Muriel), Pauline (John), Keith, and Will.

She lived a full and happy life and was enthusiastic right to her last game of Bingo at peopleCare last Saturday. She was an avid sports enthusiast in her younger years when she was a synchronized swimmer and Life Guard at Sunnyside Pool on Lakeshore Blvd. in Toronto, canoed, played tennis, badminton, skied downhill and cross country. Still active in her 50’s, she bicycled to work during her years as a respected secretary in the Ministry of Health in Toronto and Kingston. Well-traveled, she also “biked the dikes” of Holland when she retired at 61. Dorothy loved her friends and family dearly. She also loved to socialize and was a great sport about dressing up for every special occasion. Our last photo of her was in full witches’ costume just weeks ago for Halloween. She was an avid reader, knitter, and sewer and made many keepsakes for her grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her four children, Patricia “Tricia” of Tavistock, Penny Smith of Markham,  Pam Gregory (David Graham) of Newcastle,  Paul Sexton (Ann Cornish) of Stratford; eight grandchildren, Jason Chesworth (Ashley Ireland) of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Travis Smith (Kendall Mimeault) of New York City, Andrea Smith (Field Burgoyne) of Toronto, Kelly Gregory (Andrew Lawton) of Toronto, Erin Trescases (Olivier) of Toronto, Ryan Sexton (Nicki) of Ajax, Aislynn Griffin (Grahame), Karlie Hartman (Matthew) of Janetville; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Sadly, Dorothy was also predeceased by her sons-in-law, Doug Wettlaufer, Warren Smith and Gord Gregory.

Relatives and friends will be received at Grace United Church, 116 Woodstock St. S., Tavistock on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 2 – 2:45 p.m. where the funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. The Rev.
